My Pap Smear Results Were Abnormal — Now What?

Hearing that your Pap smear results came back “abnormal” can feel overwhelming. The good news? Abnormal doesn’t automatically mean cancer. In fact, most abnormal Pap results are caused by minor issues that can be treated or monitored.

Our providers at Advanced Women’s Healthcare of Waxahachie are always here to keep you informed and one step ahead. Here’s what you need to know about what those results mean, why they happen, and what steps usually come next.

What does an abnormal pap smear mean?

A pap smear checks the cells of your cervix for changes that might indicate infection, inflammation, or precancerous conditions. When the rest are “abnormal,” it simply means that something unusual was found.

Common causes of abnormal results include:

Human papillomavirus (HPV)

This is the most common reason for abnormal Pap results.

Inflammation or infection

Anything from yeast, bacteria, or even irritation can be a common sign of abnormal results.

Precancerous cell changes

This is called dysplasia. Treatment is necessary, but dysplasia may or may not develop into cancer.

Other cellular changes

This can sometimes be related to aging, menopause, or other factors.

Next steps after an abnormal pap

Our team recommends follow-up care based on the type of abnormal result and your health history.

Some common next steps include:

Repeat Pap test

Sometimes, results can be inconclusive, and our team may recommend a retest in 6 to 12 months.

HPV testing

HPV testing can identify high-risk strains of the virus that may increase the risk of cancer.

Colposcopy

This study provides a closer examination of your cervix using a specialized magnifying instrument.

Biopsy

Your provider may recommend a small tissue sampling (biopsy) of the abnormal cells for further testing. This is often completed during colposcopy.

How to protect your cervical health

While abnormal results can’t always be prevented, there are steps you can take to support long-term cervical health:

If you’ve received abnormal Pap results, the most important step is to stay in communication with our team.
